Signs Your First Period is Coming!
Share
Your first period is a big milestone, and it often doesn’t come without warning. Your body usually gives you small signs that it is getting ready, even if you don’t notice them right away.
Everyone’s body is different, and these signs can happen months or even years before your first period arrives.
Let’s go through some of the most common changes you might notice.
🌸 Breast Development
One of the earliest signs of puberty is breast development.
You may notice:
-
Small, tender bumps under your nipples (called breast buds)
-
One breast growing faster than the other at first
-
Mild soreness or sensitivity
This is completely normal. Breast development usually starts about 1–3 years before your first period.
💧 White Discharge
You might notice a thin white or clear fluid in your underwear. This is called vaginal discharge.
It is:
-
Normal and healthy
-
A sign your body is developing as it should
-
Often one of the final signs before your first period
Wearing a panty liner can help you feel more comfortable if you notice it often.
📏 Growth Spurts
During puberty, your body may suddenly grow faster than before.
You might notice:
-
Getting taller quickly
-
Feet or hands growing first
-
Needing new clothes or shoes more often
This rapid growth usually happens before or around the same time your periods begin.
🌼 Mild Cramps
Some girls feel light cramps or stomach discomfort before their first period.
You might notice:
-
A pulling or tightening feeling in your lower stomach
-
Slight back discomfort
-
Random aches that come and go
These feelings are caused by your uterus preparing for its monthly cycle.
🌸 Mood Changes
Hormones can also affect how you feel emotionally.
You may experience:
-
Feeling more sensitive than usual
-
Mood swings (happy one moment, upset the next)
-
Irritability or frustration
-
Feeling overwhelmed for no clear reason
These emotional changes are a normal part of puberty and can happen before your first period arrives.
💜 Everyone’s Body Is Different
It’s important to remember that not everyone experiences these signs in the same way or at the same time.
Some girls may notice all of them, while others may only notice a few. Some may get their period soon after these signs start, while for others it may take longer.
There is no “right” timeline—your body knows exactly what it is doing, and it will happen when it is ready.
Growing with Confidence
Your body gives you signs when it is preparing for your first period. Learning to understand these changes can help you feel more confident and less surprised when it happens.
At Anza, we believe every girl deserves to feel informed, supported, and proud of her growing body. 💜
