Vaginal Discharge
Share
Vaginal discharge is something many girls notice during puberty, and it can sometimes feel confusing or even worrying. But in most cases, it is a completely normal and healthy part of how your body works.
Learning about it can help you feel more confident and less unsure about what’s happening with your body.
💧 What Is Vaginal Discharge?
Vaginal discharge is a fluid that comes from the vagina.
It is made by your body to:
-
Keep the vagina clean
-
Protect against infections
-
Remove old cells and bacteria
You might notice it in your underwear as a small amount of fluid during the day.
🌸 Why Is It Normal?
Discharge is a normal part of puberty and usually starts before your first period.
It shows that your body is developing and that your hormones are active. Almost every girl experiences it at some point.
It is not dirty, and it is not something to be ashamed of.
🎨 Different Colors and What They Mean
Discharge can change in color and texture throughout your cycle. Most changes are normal.
-
Clear or white: Very normal and common
-
Milky white: Normal, especially during puberty
-
Light yellow (very light): Can be normal if there is no smell or irritation
-
Thick or strong-smelling discharge: May need attention
Small changes are normal, but your body may also show signs when something is not right.
🚨 When to Tell an Adult or Doctor
You should talk to a trusted adult or healthcare provider if you notice:
-
A strong, unusual smell
-
Green, gray, or very yellow discharge
-
Itching, burning, or irritation
-
Pain when using the bathroom
-
Sudden or big changes in discharge
These signs may mean your body needs medical attention, and it’s always okay to ask for help.
