What is Puberty?
Growing up is an exciting journey, and one of the biggest changes you'll experience is puberty. It can bring lots of questions, and that's completely normal! At Anza, we're here to help you understand what's happening to your body so you can feel confident every step of the way.
What is Puberty?
Puberty is the stage of life when a child's body begins to grow and develop into an adult body. During this time, your body goes through many physical and emotional changes that prepare it for adulthood.
These changes happen because your body starts producing special chemical messengers called hormones.
What Are Hormones?
Think of hormones as your body's tiny messengers. They travel through your body, telling different parts what to do and when to do it.
During puberty, hormones tell your body to:
-
Grow taller
-
Develop breasts
-
Start growing body hair
-
Begin your menstrual cycle (period)
-
Experience other important changes as you mature
Hormones also affect how you feel, which is why your emotions may seem stronger than before.
When Does Puberty Start?
Everyone is different, but most girls begin puberty between 8 and 14 years old.
Some girls start earlier, while others begin a little later—and that's completely normal. Your body has its own timeline, and there's no "perfect" age to start puberty.
Instead of comparing yourself to friends or classmates, remember that every person's body develops at its own pace.
Physical Changes During Puberty
As your body grows, you may notice several changes.
🌸 Breast Development
For many girls, breast development is one of the first signs of puberty. You might notice small, tender bumps under one or both nipples called breast buds. One breast may grow faster than the other at first, and that's perfectly normal.
📏 Growth Spurts
You may suddenly grow several inches taller over a short period of time. Your hands, feet, arms, and legs may grow before the rest of your body catches up.
🌿 Body Hair
Hair will begin growing in new places, including under your arms and around your pubic area. This is a healthy and normal part of growing up.
✨ Skin Changes
Your skin may become oilier than before, which can lead to pimples or acne. Washing your face gently every day and following a simple skincare routine can help keep your skin healthy.
💧 Sweating More
As your sweat glands become more active, you'll likely notice that you sweat more than you used to—especially during sports, hot weather, or physical activity.
🌼 Body Odor
Because of increased sweating, you may notice a stronger body odor. Taking regular showers, wearing clean clothes, and using deodorant can help you stay fresh and comfortable.
Emotional Changes
Puberty doesn't just change your body—it can also change how you feel.
You may experience:
-
Mood swings
-
Feeling happy one moment and frustrated the next
-
Becoming more sensitive
-
Feeling embarrassed or self-conscious sometimes
-
Wanting more independence
-
Feeling excited, nervous, or confused about growing up
These feelings are a normal part of puberty. Hormones can affect your emotions, and it's okay to have days when your feelings seem stronger than usual.
Talking to a trusted parent, guardian, teacher, or another caring adult can help if you're feeling overwhelmed.
Remember: Everyone Grows Differently
One of the most important things to know about puberty is that there is no "right" timeline.
Some girls:
-
Get taller first.
-
Develop breasts first.
-
Get their period earlier or later.
-
Grow faster than their friends.
Every body is unique, and comparing yourself to others can make growing up feel more stressful. Your body knows exactly what it's doing, and it will grow at the pace that's right for you.
Growing with Confidence
Puberty is a sign that your body is growing just as it should. While some of the changes may feel new or even a little scary, they are all a natural part of becoming who you are.
At Anza, we believe that understanding your body is the first step toward feeling confident in it. As you continue exploring our Learning Center, you'll find helpful guides about your first period, menstrual hygiene, period products, and everything you need to know about growing up.
Remember: growing up isn't something to fear—it's something to celebrate. 💜
